PictureMartha Harper
Martha Carol Harper was born in Bonham, Texas, on October 23, 1927, just before the start of the Great Depression. Her family was fortunate that her father, an architect, always had steady work and they wanted for nothing, but the lessons of frugality and making things last stayed with her and her older sister their entire lives.

Martha was an expert pianist. She began piano lessons at age 5 and continued her lessons for the next 12 years. As an adult, she played the piano in church, and there she developed a love of organ music. Her husband, Charles, bought her an electric organ and she played it for many years.

Martha learned to oil paint later in life and she filled many canvasses with her colorful, vibrant art work.

Martha never considered herself an intellectual, but she was an avid reader and loved word puzzles of any variety. She also loved jigsaw puzzles and almost always had one in progress somewhere in the house. She played golf, and loved card games and dominoes.

But Martha's favorite pastime was traveling in a car. She was her happiest behind the wheel, with an open stretch of road in front of her. She traveled all over the U.S. in her car, visiting friends and acquaintances, sometimes with a companion and sometimes alone. She was never afraid out on the road alone, and she never had a mishap.

Martha loved her family dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Pearl Peters, her sister, Dorothy Clay, her husband, Charles Harper, and her daughter, Catherine Harper. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Dreher and her husband, Bill Dreher; grandchildren Tracy Shores and her husband Matthew Shores, David Dreher and his wife Lisa Dreher. and Lauren Walsh and her husband Khristopher Walsh. She also adored her great-grandchildren Kharis Walsh, Kellan Walsh, Warner Shores and Meric Dreher.

Martha departed this life to be with Jesus on May 8, 2016.

Now we say goodbye to Martha as she embarks on that great highway to heaven.

God speed, Mama...
